WHO warns of ‘hoax’ home remedies amid COVID-19 pandemic

GENEVA (Reuters) – The World Health Organization on Saturday warned people not to resort to so-called “miracle” home remedies, including drinking bleach, to protect themselves from COVID-19. Misinformation about bogus cures for the novel coronavirus has proliferated since the virus emerged in China in late last year, and the WHO has repeatedly condemned unfounded health advice. In its latest guidance on the virus, the WHO said there was no evidence for self-treating with any medicines, including antibiotics, as a prevention or cure for COVID-19. “Currently there is no proof that hydroxychloroquine or any other drug can cure or prevent COVID-19,” the WHO said. “The use of untested medicines can be dangerous, and people should be aware of potential harmful effects before using them.” The advisory comes after a number of cases of people drinking bleach, a corrosive chemical used in household cleaning products, based on false claims that it can cure COVID-19. The WHO said there was no scientific basis for this belief, and that drinking bleach can cause serious health problems, including burns to the mouth, esophagus and stomach. The agency also warned against using other methods to try to prevent or cure COVID-19, such as: – Gargling with salt water – Drinking alcohol – Taking hot baths – Using hand dryers – Sniffing chlorine – Eating garlic – Wearing a face mask 24 hours a day The WHO said that the best way to protect yourself from COVID-19 is to follow the advice of public health authorities, which includes: – Washing your hands frequently with soap and water – Maintaining social distance from others – Staying home if you are sick – Wearing a face mask in public places – Covering your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze – Getting vaccinated when it becomes available The WHO also urged people to be cautious of online information about COVID-19, and to only refer to trusted sources such as their local health authority or the WHO website..
